I found this EDSO Assignment very personally informative and as a result I feel compelled to share it here. This assignment involved designing a Placed Based Learning lesson at a location of our choice. Because I had been living in Revelstoke I wanted to investigate a discomforting observation I’ve had… why are there so few indigenous people living in this area? Through this project I uncovered the answer.
The Sinixt People who lived in this region were displaced very harshly in two waves. By the creation of the legal border between Canada and the United States, which severed their traditional territory. And then by the construction of many dams in this watershed which flooded many of their settlement areas which bordered waterways which they used for transportation. The inundation of this areas has also rendered much of their history inaccessible and therefore untold.
