For this assignment we were tasked with bringing a social issue into the classroom and having our class work to address it. The lesson I developed revolves around language revitalization. The concept is to essentially create two ‘offical languages’ for the school. The rational is that language is not just learned in formal lessons but in how often it is seen, heard… familiarity is everything when it comes to language and language is a barometer of the health of a culture. Truly honouring indigenous culture and trying to bring indigenous teachings and philosophies to the forefronts of our classrooms cannot happen without us first honouring and learning local indigenous languages.
